Magdalen Van Valkenburg Ortner, 89, died Thursday (May 29, 2003) in Wyoming County Nursing Facility, Warsaw.
Born Magdalen George in Bennington, she was a 1931 graduate of Attica High School. She received a teaching diploma for elementary grades from Geneseo Normal School in 1936. She taught for many years in the Attica School District, including a one-room schoolhouse in Bennington and Attica Elementary School, from which she retired.
She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Attica, Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Darien and Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church in East Bennington.
She was the widow of Lee Van Valkenburg, who died in 1949, and Joseph Ortner, who died in 1998.
Surviving is a brother, Charles George of Kenmore, and a sister, Mary Posthumus of Strykersville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Vincent de Paul Church, East Avenue, Attica. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery, Attica.
