I do not know Lynne Slepian or her politics. I do know, as we all do, that she is a widow who witnessed her husband's murder in their home, in the presence of their children. I suspect the letter writer who labeled her as a "bleeding-heart liberal," while commenting on Slepian's stated desire for harsh punishment for her husband's murderer, knows no more about her than I do.
Isn't it telling, then, that he framed her remarks as those of a bleeding-heart liberal -- read as: supporter of abortion rights -- rather than a grieving widow? That kind of narrow-mindedness on the part of those who oppose abortion rights is all too common, and undoubtedly fuels the insane fervor of murderers like James Kopp.
