Batavia GOP endorses 4 for council

BATAVIA -- The City Republican Committee Tuesday announced endorsements for two City Council incumbents and two political newcomers for the November election when six council ward seats will be decided.

GOP Chairman Joseph R. Gerace said Daniel P. Snyder will be backed for the 3rd ward position now held by J. Peter Garlock, who will not seek another 2-year term.

Larry J. Mortellaro, a 5th ward resident for 44 years, will seek to unseat Kathleen Briggs.

Incumbents Ann Pololak and James R. Russell a former councilman, received endorsements for wards 2 and 4 respectively. Both were appointed last year to fill vacancies.

Gerace said the committee is close to naming candidates for ward one to oppose Henry E. Moscicki, who was elected on the GOP ticket but later switched parties along with Briggs. The Ward 6 seat now held by veteran council member Democrat Rose Mary Christian will also have a Republican candidate, Gerace said.

The committee endorsed two incumbent Genesee County legislators, John J. Hodgins and Hollis D. Upson, both of Batavia. All nine county lawmakers face election in November.
