MONEY TO REBUILD IRAQ COULD BE BETTER SPENT

I take issue with Charles Krauthammer's May 16 column in The News. He wrote that Saddam Hussein turned Iraq to rubble. How many thousands of bombs did we pour into that country during our "short" war? How many thousands of Iraqi civilians did we kill and maim? Baghdad is a city destroyed; no water or electricity. We are responsible for this.

We are spending billions to rebuild a country that we destroyed. Meanwhile our schools, cities and states are in dire need of rebuilding. No weapons of mass destruction or chemical weapons have been found, or the means to deliver them to the United States. The U.N. inspectors were doing a good job and should have been given more time. Saddam was an evil man, but this war was not warranted. We now have the responsibility of rebuilding Afghanistan and Iraq while our country suffers.
