Elena E. Read, 81, active in community groups here for many years, died Saturday (May 24, 2003) in her home after a long illness, during which she received care from Niagara Hospice.
She was born Elena Strasburg in Sanborn and graduated from LaSalle High School, Niagara Falls.
She held numerous jobs in her career at local companies, including American Salesbook Co., later Moore Business Forms, E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., Hooker Chemical Co. and Allen's Men's Shop, all in Niagara Falls, and the Kmart store in the Town of Niagara.
She was a member of Hope United Methodist Church, Pekin, and the Sanborn United Methodist Church Women's Guild.
Mrs. Read was a life member and past president of the Women's Auxiliary of Post 969, American Legion. She was a member of the Sanborn Area Historical Society and the Sanbornite Senior Citizens.
Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Lionel L., known as "Les"; two sons, William L. and Ronald L., both of Sanborn; a brother, Robert Strasburg of Niagara Falls; three sisters, Olga Wermuth of Youngstown, Hilda Hermanson of Sanborn and Alma Herbst of Lockport; and two granddaughters.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Rhoney Funeral Home, 5893 Hoover Road. Burial will be in Mount View Cemetery, Pekin.
