The antics of some of the lame-duck Buffalo Common Council members and their president during the current budget hearings give me an idea for a greater savings to us taxpayers.
If the Council president and members at large who were voted out of office last November and will officially leave on Dec. 31 really want to help our financially strapped city, they would voluntarily leave office when the current budget ends on June 30. The six-months' savings of salaries, staff and benefits could preserve the jobs of firefighters and police officers or possibly restore interscholastic sports in the Buffalo Public Schools.
More than anything, it would change the public-access televised Common Council meetings from Comedy Central to effective, professional business meetings with the future of our region as the primary objective.
