LOCKPORT -- Susan M. Sussman of Niagara Falls has started work as Niagara County's Social Services attorney in charge of prosecuting cases where the county seeks termination of parental rights. She replaces David L. McIntyre, who died Feb. 11 at age 61.
Social Services Commissioner Anthony J. Restaino said Sussman is a former litigator for the City of Niagara Falls Law Department, a post she left to join the county.
Her full-time duties involve Family Court action in which children who have been in foster care for at least 15 months are to be available for adoption.
Sussman's salary is $50,279, of which 50 percent is covered by the federal government and 30 percent by the state.
Smoke-free room opens at casino
NIAGARA FALLS -- Even though the Seneca Nation of Indians does not have to comply with non-smoking regulations that go into effect in every public building in the state July 24, the Seneca Niagara Casino is opening a smoke-free room today.
The casino will open the 15,750-square-foot Turtle Island room with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 5 p.m. at the casino, 310 Fourth St. The new room will include 325 slot machines as well as a dozen gaming tables.
"Our primary focus is customer comfort," said Rickey Armstrong, president of the Seneca Nation of Indians. "While the casino is exempt from New York State smoking regulations, our smoke-free room has been a priority because we want to make sure everyone is comfortable during their visit."
The Blue Heron Club for high stakes players also opens today.
The 2,500-square-foot club will accommodate about 60 players. The club features full-size baccarat tables and blackjack.
A private reception for selected guests will inaugurate the Blue Heron Club at 8 p.m.
Spitzer to attend Democrats fund-raiser
NIAGARA FALLS -- State Attorney General Eliot L. Spitzer will be the featured guest at a $75-a-ticket reception to raise money for Democratic County Legislature candidates from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the LaSalle Yacht Club, 68th Street and Buffalo Avenue.
Tickets are available by calling David Smith, treasurer of the Niagara County Democratic Committee, at 434-1032. Some tickets will be available at the door.
Over 100 bikes to be sold at auction
LOCKPORT -- The city will hold its annual bicycle auction at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Police Department garage in the basement of the Municipal Building.
More than 100 bikes will be offered for bids. They are bicycles that were recovered after being found or stolen that were unclaimed for at least 60 days.
The goods will be available for bidders' inspection starting at 9:30 a.m. Some city surplus merchandise is also expected to be available.
Music parents club schedules concert
SANBORN -- Niagara-Wheatfield Senior High School Music Parents Club will present a dinner and show at "Concert Under the Stars and Ted's Barbecue," 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Niagara-Wheatfield High School Courtyard, 2292 Saunders Settlement Road.
The barbecue begins at 5:30 and is served throughout the event. Music begins at 6.
