In 1934, Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker were shot to death in a police ambush in Bienville, La. . . . In 1937, industrialist John D. Rockefeller died in Ormond Beach, Fla. . . . JOAN ALBARELLA of West Seneca, an associate professor in writing at the University at Buffalo and a member of Mystery Writers of America, Sisters in Crime and the Italian American Writers Association, has her third "Nikki Barnes" mystery on the shelves of area bookstores.

The mystery, called "Close To You," is a sequel to "Agenda For Murder" and "Called To Kill."

Albarella told Olaf that in the latest book, Nikki Barnes, now a reverend, "once again joins her Vietnam vet Army buddy, police Sgt. Max Mullen, to help catch a treacherous serial killer who is terrorizing a small college town." Albarella can be contacted at JKEA@juno.com. . . .

ANCIENT CREATURES await young visitors at the 10th annual Children's Day Program at the Penn Dixie Paleontological and Outdoor Education Center in Hamburg at 1 p.m. June 1. A dinosaur named Dieonychus and other creatures from the past will greet visitors.

Contests -- with prizes for all -- will be held for children, and there will be opportunities for viewing sunspots through a telescope, fossil collecting, cleaning and identification of fossils, face-painting and "visiting" the solar system, which will be laid out to scale. Kite-flying demonstrations also are planned.

Members of the Hamburg Natural History Society get in free. Nonmember adults will have to pay $4; children $3. The program will be held rain or shine. Visit the society's Web page at www.penndixie.org or call 627-4560 for directions and information. . . .

CHICKEN BARBECUE dinners will be served from noon until sold out June 8 in Annunciation Catholic Church Seibert Hall, 7581 Clinton St., Elma. The cost will be $6.75 for adults and $4 for children and includes half a chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, coleslaw, vegetable, bread, butter, beverage and dessert. The Annunciation Holy Name Society is sponsoring the event. . . .
