Cheryl Audrey Weiss, a Buffalo native who worked as a grief counselor here and in North Carolina, died Monday (May 19, 2003) in her Charlotte, N.C., home after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was 65.
The former "Cheri" Male received a bachelor's degree in counseling and worked for Hospice of Western New York. She also helped form Start With Today Counseling Center in Buffalo, where she worked as a grief counselor.
Since moving to Charlotte in 1992, Mrs. Weiss had been a counselor of death and dying at Unity of Charlotte. She worked as a scoring director with Measurement Inc., which develops and scores educational tests.
Mrs. Weiss loved and collected hummingbirds. She also enjoyed spending time at her cottage in Long Beach, Ont., traveling and cooking.
Survivors include her husband, Carl; three sons, Brian Henry of West Seneca, Chris Henry of Fort Worth, Texas, and Eric Henry of Cheektowaga; two daughters, Cindy Brewer of Edgewater, Fla., and Stacy Dowdy of Rock Hill, S.C.; a brother, Jerry Male of Akron; and 11 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Friday afternoon in Charlotte.
