A memorial service for Charles J. Campanella, formerly of East Aurora, will be scheduled.
Campanella, who retired toZephyrhills, Fla., 10 years ago, died unexpectedly Friday (May 16, 2003) on a cruise ship in the Gulf of Mexico near St. Petersburg, Fla. He was 79.
Born on Buffalo's West Side, he fought with Merrill's Marauders in the Army Special Forces in Burma during World War II before contracting malaria and being shipped home to recover.
Campanella worked as a rigger at Donner-Hanna Coke Co. for more than 40 years before retiring 20 years ago. He golfed daily near his Florida residence and traveled widely with his wife, the former Gladys Mendonsa.
Surviving, besides his wife, are four sons, Michael of East Aurora, Robert of Bridgeville, Pa., Peter of South Wales and David Mendonsa of Illinois; three sisters, Carol Doyle of Orchard Park, Jane Rogalski and Josephine Czpryniski of Eden; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
