I find it very difficult to understand how the State Legislature can justify the largest tax increase in the state's history. It is apparent that the Republicans joined the Democrats in bowing to the pressure of the unions and other public pressure groups. The independent citizen has little say in this selfish move, which increased the state's budget in a time of great financial need and increased taxes to cover the cost.
The Republicans showed a lack of courage to stand up for the independent taxpayers. But they caved in to the pressure groups to help ensure their re-election. They showed no concern for what effect this tax increase will have on the financial future of the state. With the six largest employers in Western New York being governmental agencies, how can those who work in the private sector possibly have a chance for their voices to be heard?
