MAYVILLE -- A man who pleaded guilty to shooting Fredonia Police Officer James Harrington last month was sentenced Monday in Chautauqua County Court.

Jason McQuiggan, 24, of Nevins Street, Dunkirk, was sentenced to 25 years in jail on the charge of aggravated assault on a police officer, Chautauqua County District Attorney James Subjack said Monday.

Concurrent sentences include 10 years for second-degree burglary and three years for felony weapon possession. McQuiggan also will have five years of post-release supervision, Subjack added.

"He will be in prison for 21 to 22 years. He will not be able to prey on anyone else," Subjack explained.

McQuiggan read an apology to the officer and his family before the sentence was given, Subjack said.

"He understood what he did was wrong, and he will pay dearly for it," Subjack commented.

McQuiggan wounded Harrington in the left leg with a .22 caliber rifle April 9 when he fired shots at police responding to an assault call on Union Street. He was arrested after a two-hour standoff.
