It is time to call the proposed 8 percent tax increase for what it is: a dagger into the hearts of legitimate business in Niagara County. The only person who can be in favor of the increase is Smokin' Joe Anderson. Every percent rise in tax just makes the lines longer at the outlet on Route 31.
Since everyone believes that the Indian casino is the economic sav ior of the county, why not wait until we see the economic impact of it? If it is the panacea they think it will be, sales tax revenue will increase even at the 7 percent rate. Of course, if it is not the economic be all and end all, we can always let the Nation just buy up the county.
What really needs to happen is to ask our state representatives to overhaul the whole Medicaid system, including a five to seven year reach back for property transfers. There also needs to be economic incentives to people who care for aged parents. State Sen. George Maziarz is right -- get our house in order, the rest will take care of itself. Say "NO" to an increase in sales tax.
