This past summer, the Erie County Legislature voted to approve the continuation of the costly project labor agreement for the second phase of the courthouse project. The Democrats in the Legislature chose to ignore the savings demonstrated by the non-PLA bids, and instead accepted the higher PLA bids. The non-PLA bids would have saved taxpayers $950,000. But the Democrats, specifically Legislator Mark Schroeder, argued that the real savings would have been only between $300,000 and $400,000.
Now the county is asking the Legislature to approve a bond measure for additional funding to cover the extra cost of the PLA. This request increases the costs to the taxpayer by another $190,000.
Schroeder and his fellow Democrats have now wasted over $1.1 million of the taxpayers' money -- money that could have been used to lower taxes, aid Erie County Medical Center, improve roads and bridges or renovate Erie Community College campuses. We are now left to wonder what else Schroeder and his colleagues will vote for under the guise of "saving taxpayer dollars."
This is just another example of how PLAs waste taxpayer dollars and hurt the area and the local economy.
