IT'S SERVICE, NOT FOOD, THAT THE STATE IS TAXING

I am writing in response to a recent letter writer's confusion on why prepared foods are taxed. It is not determined by the stores, restaurants or fast-food lobbyists. It is New York State tax law.

Food isn't taxed because it is a necessity. Having someone make your sandwich or cook your meal is considered a luxury. It is the service that is taxed, not the food.
