Shirley B. Fero, 82, who taught first through sixth grades in Michigan, died Wednesday (Nov. 27, 2002) in her Town of Niagara home. She had been under the care of Niagara Hospice.
The former Shirley Baier was born in Cheboygan, Mich., and graduated from Cheboygan High School and Cheboygan Normal College.
She taught at Burt Lake Rural School for a few years and married David G. Fero in 1942.
She raised her family in Allen Park, Mich., and taught school until 1978.
Mrs. Fero and her family moved to Pellston, Mich., also spending winters in Yuma, Ariz.
She worked as a pediatric nurse's aide for Wyandotte General Hospital. She also was a reading volunteer for children.
She was a member of St. Clemons Church, Pellston, and enjoyed rock collecting.
When Mrs. Fero's husband died in 1999, she moved to Niagara Falls to be near her daughter Krista M. of the Town of Niagara.
Survivors include a son, David of Saline, Mich.; two other daughters, Susan Fero Hutton of Roseville, Mich., and Rebecca Marshall of Virginia Beach, Va.; three sisters, Mauritta Kennedy of Tucson, Ariz., and Olive Crawford and Hazel Baier, both of Michigan; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Otto Redanz Funeral Home, 2215 Military Road. Burial will be private.
