Edward F. Szymanski, a retired Lackawanna school principal, died unexpectedly Thursday (Nov. 21, 2002) in his Lackawanna home. He was 85.
A lifelong resident of the Buffalo area, he graduated from Lackawanna High School and earned bachelor's and master's degrees in education from the University at Buffalo.
He served in the Army during World War II, then returned to teach social studies in Lackawanna schools. He later became principal of McKinley Elementary School and retired in 1984 after 42 years with the district.
He enjoyed fishing and reading, and was fluent in foreign languages, particularly Russian and other Slavic languages. He also was active in the Lackawanna Junior Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, the former Nada Atanasoff; two sons, the Rev. Edward S. of Baltimore and William of Falls Church, Va.; and two sisters, Helen Kraus of Lake View and Julia Bednarek of Orchard Park.
Private services were held in Our Lady of Victory Basilica, Lackawanna, and burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery, Lackawanna.
