Hamburg detectives probe burning of playground unit

Town of Hamburg detectives suspect that young people involved in illegal drinking over the weekend may have burned down a plastic modular unit in the Bethford playground, off Lake Avenue, near McKinley Parkway.

The modular unit, installed about a year ago, was destroyed in the Saturday evening fire, which left $14,000 damage. Detectives believe an accelerant was used to torch the jungle-gym type unit.

"We did find beer cans in the area, so there's an assumption some illicit drinking was going on, and there's probably a tie-in there," Lt. William Lickfield said Monday.

Anyone with information about the fire, which was reported about 7:20 p.m., is asked to call Town of Hamburg police at 648-5111. Detectives said they recovered some evidence at the scene.

Gas line flaw causes fire at Riverside brass plant

A problem in a 3-foot gas line to a furnace sparked a $5,000 fire early Monday morning at the Outokumpu American Brass plant on Sayre Street in Buffalo's Riverside section.

The fire, reported at 12:39 a.m., activated the sprinkler system, and workers immediately shut off the gas line to extinguish the fire, Buffalo fire officials reported.
