Two Cheektowaga officers promoted

Two Cheektowaga police officers have been promoted to detective.

Michael Hockwater, 36, has been a member of the department since 1989. He has worked undercover for the Vice, Gambling and Narcotics Squad and has been awarded two chief's medals of valor. Hockwater also is a member of Forks Fire Department.

Joseph Crean, 37, who joined the police department in 1990, has won the distinguished conduct award, five fitness awards and other commendations, and has served in the bike patrol. He is a member of the New York National Guard.

Mayor lifts drought alert in Akron

Akron Mayor Michael F. Charles has ended a drought alert for village water customers.

The drought warning was first declared in early September. Residents and businesses were asked to conserve water and avoid unnecessary uses. During the time of the drought-alert and drought-warning situation, the water level dropped as low as 67.75 inches below the fill level, village officials said.

Friday Family Fun set for Dec. 6

The Cheektowaga Parks, Recreation and Youth Services Department will conduct its holiday session of "Friday Family Fun" from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 6 in the Alexander Community Center, 275 Alexander Ave.

Christmas crafts, games, snacks and other surprises are planned. Children 5 and older, accompanied by an adult, are welcome. Pre-registration is required by calling 897-7207, Ext. 44.
