A resident of the Village Mobile Home Park was arrested Friday night and charged with setting his own home afire earlier in the day. The blaze destroyed the suspect's home and spread to three others.
Lance C. Boyer, 38, of 66 Pheasant Run, was charged with third-degree arson and jailed in lieu of $10,000 cash or $20,000 property bail.
Sheriff Thomas A. Beilein said Boyer had been arrested on a driving-while-intoxicated charge in the City of Lockport in the wee hours Friday, and after he was released on bail, said he was going to go home, set his trailer on fire and kill himself.
"Obviously he went home and set the trailer on fire, but he didn't kill himself," Beilein said.
The sheriff said Boyer was discovered at a residence in the nearby Leisure Acres Mobile Home Park. Both mobile home parks are located off South Transit Road.
Beilein said Boyer was treated in Inter-Community Memorial Hospital, Newfane, after taking an overdose of medication. He said Boyer became combative and was arraigned in the hospital by Newfane Town Justice Bruce Barnes.
The fire was reported at 10:42 a.m. and destroyed Boyer's home.
Flames spread to homes at 65 and 67 Pheasant Run and 63 Willowbend Drive, which had exterior damage. Three sheriff's deputies evacuated the residents of those homes, some of whom had been asleep at the time. No residents were injured in the fires, though one of the deputies suffered a minor burn on his hand.
Beilein said it hasn't been determined exactly how the fire was set because the ashes of Boyer's home were still too hot Friday.
