The University at Buffalo wrestling team won three of the last four bouts to upset nationally ranked Lock Haven, 23-20, as it opened its dual meet season Thursday night in Alumni Arena.

A pin by senior Gary Cooper (174 pounds) was followed by wins from junior Garrett Bontempo (184) and Lewiston-Porter grad Kyle Cerminara (197), a sophomore. The Bald Eagles are ranked 20th by the Amateur Wrestling News and 24th by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.

Lock Haven was ahead, 17-9, after five bouts, but Cooper's pin of Mike Greenberg in 2:41 reversed the momentum of a match. Bontempo (10-3 over Morgan Homer) and Cerminara (17-5 over Tim Boetsch) followed with major decisions to give UB a 23-17 lead.

Freshman 125-pounder Mike Sebaaly (Lancaster) had the Bulls' only other pin, taking out Leslie Morrow in 4:20.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: St. Bonaventure coach Jim Crowley announced the signings of 5-foot-10 guard Stephanie Merlo of Mount Pocono, Pa.; 6-3 forward Megan Cable of Columbus, Ohio; and 6-1 Canadian forward Audrey Latendresse. Latendresse was the MVP of the 2001 Canadian Collegiate AAA Championship and is averaging 13.5 points for Montmorency College in Quebec.
