Richard C. Berthot, a career welder and a retired Niagara University maintenance specialist who served in the Navy during two wars, died Tuesday (Nov. 19, 2002) in Schoellkopf Health Care Center after a lengthy illness. He was 75.

Berthot was born in Niagara Falls and attended the University of Iowa and Niagara County Community College in Sanborn.

He served in the South Pacific as a shipfitter third class during World War II and as a diver during the Korean War.

Berthot was a member of Post 54, Veterans of Foreign Wars; Chapter 12, Disabled American Veterans; and John J. Welch Post 381, American Legion.

Surviving are a son, John M. of Mount Vernon, Iowa; a daughter, Sharon J. Winne of Bellflower, Calif.; two grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary of the Cataract Catholic Church, 259 Fourth St., after prayers at 9:30 in Otto Redanz Funeral Home, 2215 Military Road, Town of Niagara. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston.
