Jacob R. Balling of North Tonawanda, a retired bricklayer with Balling Construction, died Tuesday (Nov. 19, 2002) in Elderwood Care Center at Oakwood, Amherst, after a brief illness. He was 82.
He worked for the City of Tonawanda firm for 40 years, retiring in 1982.
Born in the City of Tonawanda, he was a graduate of Tonawanda High School and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Balling was a past treasurer of Boy Scout Troop 833 in Wheatfield and a member of Gratwick Hose Company in North Tonawanda and the Bricklayers Union. He also was a member of Twin City Council 413, Knights of Columbus, and St. Albert the Great Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, the former Ann Elnicki; two daughters, Carol Lindke of San Jose, Calif., and Donna Oswald of Grand Island; a son, Jacob R. Jr. of Rochester Hills, Mich.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at noon Saturday in St. Albert the Great Church, Niagara Falls Boulevard and Majestic Lane, North Tonawanda. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda.
