Anthony F. Zito, who began his career as a staff accountant at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center 30 years ago, will return to the hospital as executive vice president for operations and finance.

The 50-year-old Town of Wheatfield resident is currently vice president for managed care and revenue management at Kaleida Health. He will start his new job in mid-December.

Zito started at Memorial in 1972 and was assistant vice president for fiscal services when he left in 1990.

He worked for Millard Fillmore Health System from 1991 to 1998 and was serving as vice president and chief financial officer at the time of the merger of Millard Fillmore, Buffalo General and Children's hospitals into the Kaleida system.

Memorial President Joseph A. Ruffolo said Zito "brings a wealth of experience and talent in health care management, finance and operations to our administrative team. He will be a tremendous asset to the medical center."

The professional paths of the two have crossed before, as Ruffolo also worked for the Millard Fillmore and Kaleida systems.

Zito is Ruffolo's first appointee to his new management team. Ruffolo, who took over as president of the medical center Nov. 1, immediately announced a management reorganization to align patient care services and operations in a more efficient health care delivery system to address the hospital's financial crisis.

At Kaleida, Zito has been chief negotiator of all managed care contracts. He provided oversight of revenue management, including patient financial services, reimbursement and contract management and health information services.

He also managed nine free-standing primary and specialty hospital-based clinics, developed a contracting model for hospital and physician providers and created a management services organization to meet needs of physicians.

Zito received accounting degrees from Niagara County Community College and the University at Buffalo and is enrolled in UB's master of business administration program.

He is a past president of the Western New York chapter of the Healthcare Financial Management Association and a member of the group's advisory council.
