ON THIS DAY -- In 1820, U.S. Navy Capt. Nathaniel B. Palmer discovered the frozen continent of Antarctica. . . . In 1928, the first sound-synchronized animated cartoon, Walt Disney's "Steamboat Willie," starring Mickey Mouse, premiered in New York. . . . In 1936, Germany and Italy recognized the Spanish government of Francisco Franco. . . . In 1966, U.S. Catholic bishops did away with the rule against eating meat on Fridays. . . . In 1978, California Rep. Leo J. Ryan and four other people were killed in Jonestown, Guyana, by memberes of the Peoples Temple. The killings were followed by a night of mass murder and suicide by 912 cult members. . . . In 1999, 12 people were killed when logs for a bonfire at Texas A&M University collapsed. . . .

BARBECUE CHICKEN dinners to raise money for the Kenmore East and West Varsity Booster Hockey Club's programs will be served from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday in the Kenmore East High School cafeteria, Brighton and Fries roads, Town of Tonawanda. The meal will cost $7.
