A memorial service for George A. Smith, 67, of Pflugerville, Texas, a native of Buffalo and a former maintenance supervisor for Pan American World Airways, was held Saturday in New Hope Community Church, Round Rock, Texas.
Smith died last Monday (Nov. 11, 2002) in North Austin Medical Center after a brief battle with leukemia.
In 1954, he moved from Buffalo to Newport, R.I., and entered the Navy, serving until 1962.
He then moved to New York City, where he worked as a maintenance supervisor for Pam Am at Idlewild Airport, which was renamed John F. Kennedy International Airport. He eventually was transferred to Los Angeles.
In 1982, he was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy and was placed on long-term disability. He moved back to Buffalo a few years later. About five years ago, he moved to Pflugerville to be closer to his family.
Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Shirley L.; a daughter, Robin Fink of Pflugerville; a son, Kevin C. of Southfield, Mich.; two brothers, Harry Martin of North Tonawanda and Howard Martin of Portland, Tenn.; a sister, Ellen Simon of Leesburg, Fla.; a grandson; and a granddaughter.
