McCarthy Park, with entrances off LaSalle Avenue and Amherst Street, is a beautiful spot. From this high point in the middle of Buffalo, you can see All High Stadium adjacent to Bennett High School, as well as the spires of the University at Buffalo. Lots of money has been poured into the park over the last few years.
New aluminum bleachers ring five new baseball diamonds, basketball courts, football and soccer fields. Just this year, a new concession stand and tennis courts were built. A walkway around the park perimeter, new picnic tables, benches and grills, several playground units and many new plantings complete what could be one of the nicest spots in Buffalo.
However, it is apparent that some users do not appreciate what the park has to offer. A burned-out car has been sitting next to the concession stand for at least two weeks. Across the park, someone started a big bonfire on the asphalt. This large pile of burned debris has been there over two months. The asphalt underneath appears to be ruined.
A fire also was started in the roots of one of the new trees. This tree is now dead. Other plantings were uprooted and broken, as were several of the trees. Picnic table seats and grills have been destroyed. The nets have been ripped from the basketball hoops and the bleachers upended. The porta-potties and garbage cans are regularly knocked over. There are broken bottles and dog feces on the paths and lawns, along with disposable diapers and other types of trash, despite the fact that there are many garbage cans available.
We hear constantly about what Buffalo lacks in terms of facilities and services. However, no amount of public money can protect our city treasures from those whose idea of fun is to trash whatever good exists in their environment.
