When an area of the Capitol tested positive for anthrax contamination, our elected representatives advised us to be calm, closed their offices and left the area. The postal workers in that district continued to show up, even though they knew their workplace had become the staging area for another terrorist attack. Two postal workers died.
Others are sick. We have seen many heroic things since Sept. 11. Sometimes heroism is something as astonishing as running into a burning building or wrestling a hijacker. Sometimes heroism is just showing up every day and doing your job. Our heroes in the post office deserve our thanks and respect.
