ON THIS DAY -- In 1735, John Adams, the second president of the United States, was born in Braintree, Mass. He and Thomas Jefferson died on the same day, July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence . . . In 1938, Orson Welles produced a radio show based on "War of the Worlds" by H.G. Wells. The production by the Mercury Players was so realistic concerning an invasion of Martians in New Jersey that near-panic resulted. . . .

SILENT AUCTION -- More than 400 items, including sports memorabilia, theater tickets and vacation getaways, will be offered during Medaille College's 15th annual Silent Auction from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday .

A wine-tasting and auction preview will begin at 6 p.m. in the Kevin I. Sullivan Campus Center at the college, Parkside Avenue and the Scajaquada Expressway. Guests will place written bids on items they wish to buy. At the end of the evening, the items will go to the highest bidders.

Tom Shannon of WHTT-FM will emcee the event, to benefit Medaille's Western New York Center for Children's Literacy and the college's veterinary technology program. Jay McDonnell, Class of 1980, will provide music.

Tickets for the wine-tasting and auction preview are $20 and include admission. Cost for admission alone is $5. Chief sponsors are the Dr. Nicholas D. and Patricia B. Trbovich Foundation and Amherst Paving. . . .

BETTER SAFE -- The Sno Mob Snowmobile Club of Marilla will offer a snowmobile safety course for 10- to 18-year-olds from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday and Nov. 10 at the Community Center on Two Rod Road. Registration is required, and to receive a certificate to operate a snowmobile off one's property, attendance is required at both sessions. Call 937-7255 to register. . . .

BIRTHDAY GIFTS -- The families of babies born this month in Children's Hospital are receiving a free smoke alarm, a baby bath thermometer and information on fire safety from the Western New York SAFE Kids Coalition, the Kiwanis Clubs of Western New York, the Buffalo Fire Prevention Bureau and the National SAFE at Home Foundation in conjunction with Fire Safety Month.

Fires and burns are the second-leading cause of accidental death in the home for children under 5. . . .
