The Common Council is expected to discuss a proposal to turn a long-vacant downtown church into offices and a venue for public performances when it meets at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Lawmakers are being asked to give a Buffalo company four additional months to finalize its redevelopment plan for the former Asbury Delaware United Method Church at Delaware Avenue and West Tupper Street.

Righteous Babe Records, the recording company owned by singer Ani DiFranco, wants to spend $1.3 million to turn part of the building into its corporate headquarters. But some lawmakers are concerned that the city might have to absorb $2.2 million for exterior repairs. They also note that the city likely would have to help with costs associated with turning part of the vacant church building into a performance space.
