Cheektowaga Central School psychologist Catherine Raiff offers this advice to parents to help children cope:

Be calm and reasonable with your kids.

Be aware that children may have concerns that they are not voicing. Ask them, "are you OK?" and watch for changes in eating or sleeping patterns.

Answer youngsters' questions without giving them more information than they need. It's OK to say, "I don't know" or "I'm scared," as long as you follow up by reassuring your children that you and they are safe.
