Sister Elizabeth Welch, 83, a retired teacher and a member of the Sisters of Mercy for 45 years, died Wednesday (Oct. 24, 2001) in Mercy Health Care Unit.
Born Elizabeth I. Welch, she entered the Sisters of Mercy community in 1956 and took her vows in 1959.
A native of Niagara Falls, she graduated from St. Mary's School, Loretto Academy and Nazareth College.
She taught at Mount Mercy Academy and St. Bernadette's and St. Teresa's schools in Buffalo and SS. Peter & Paul School in Jamestown and then began social work ministry with Catholic Charities, based at St. Brigid's Church in Buffalo.
From 1972 to 1990, she worked in the pastoral care departments at Mercy and Kenmore Mercy hospitals. Her later years were spent in prayer ministry.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered today in Mercy Center Chapel. Burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery, Lackawanna.
