John S. Ciera, 78, who worked as a machinist at Union Carbide Corp. for 40 years, died Wednesday (Oct. 24, 2001) in his home after a brief illness.
He was born in Niagara Falls and attended local schools.
Before entering the U.S. Army in World War II, he worked as a machinist at Union Carbide. He began serving in 1943 with the 423rd Infantry Regiment and was stationed in Central Europe and Northern France. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
Ciera then returned to Union Carbide and retired in 1986.
He married Martha Kuczynski in 1947 in North Tonawanda. They had celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary just prior to her death in 1999.
Ciera was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church and the LaSalle Sportsman's Club, Town of Niagara.
Survivors include three sons, John F. of the Town of Tonawanda and Paul and David , both of the Town of Niagara; a daughter, Susan of Cambria; a sister, Julie Olearczyk of Clarence; and three grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday in Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 1065 Military Road, after prayers at 9:30 in Lane Funeral Home, 8622 Buffalo Ave. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston.
