Six skaters representing local clubs advanced to either Junior Nationals or Eastern Sectionals at the North Atlantic Figure Skating Championships last weekend in Lake Placid.

Two-time national champion Robbie Dierking, a 13-year-old from Jamestown and member of the Jamestown Skating Club, won the short and long programs in the Novice Men competition to reach the Eastern Sectionals to be held in Pittsburgh in early December. He will be joined by Krista Buffi, a 12-year-old from East Amherst and the Niagara University Skating Club, who finished third in Novice Ladies.

David Mueller, 13, a Lockport native who trains in Cleveland but represents the Buffalo Skating Club, won both programs in Intermediate Men. Mary Beth Anderson of Erie, Pa., and the Jamestown Skating Club finished fourth in Intermediate Ladies. And Ashley Mitchell of East Amherst and Adam Machamer of Rochester and the Niagara University Skating Club finished second in Juvenile Pairs. All will participate in the Junior Nationals at Chicago in mid-December.

A seventh local skater, 13-year-old Carly Donowick of West Seneca, who is training at the University of Delaware Skating Club with partner Brice Wonders, qualified last week for Junior Nationals in Intermediate Dance out of the South Atlantic Region.
The Wheatfield Junior Blades will play exhibition games against the Philadelphia Jr. Flyers on Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m. Admission is $3 for these Junior B games at the Hockey Outlet on Niagara Falls Boulevard.
The second annual Big Four Tip-Off luncheon is set for Thursday, Nov. 8 at 11:30 a.m. in the Hyatt Regency in Buffalo. Former Niagara men's coach Jack Armstrong, now a commentator for the Toronto Raptors, will speak, and the coaches of the men's and women's teams at Canisius, Niagara, St. Bonaventure and UB will attend.
