I just finished reading the Oct. 2 story about the measures being taken to secure the White House, the Capitol, all government buildings and the National Monuments. As the mother of a son at George Washington University, I would like to know what is being done to secure the safety of students and other residents of Washington.
Thousands of parents have sent their children to the most exciting city in the world to study political science, law, international affairs and journalism. How sad that the actions of one evil man and his flunkies have robbed our children of their innocence. The university is part of the "secured area" surrounding the White House. This is frightening for these young adults and their families. The students and residents need to be as well prepared for another terrorist attack as our elected officials are. Their proximity to the White House makes them targets as well.
I love my country and I am proud to be an American. I mourn the demise of life as we know it. As a parent, this heightened security does not give me comfort. It makes me realize how vulnerable my son, and all the other sons and daughters are, and it makes it very difficult to sleep at night.
