LOCAL BUSINESS GROUP AWADS SCHOLARSHIPS TO TWO UB STUDENTS

Two state University at Buffalo honors students have received scholarships from a local business group.

Freshmen Benjamin Freer and Kari Mergenhagen, both of Amherst, each received four-year scholarships.

Julie Mann and Vikas Dua, both from Amherst and now sophomores, were the first recipients of the 43x79 Build Buffalo Scholarship last year.

All four students will also have the opportunity to intern and work with local business leaders.

The scholarship fund was created with a $48,000 donation from the 43x79 Group, a group of business leaders which named their organization after Buffalo's latitude and longitude.

Frank J. McGuire, chairman of the McGuire Group, donated $40,000. McGuire is a 1953 University at Buffalo graduate and serves on the executive committee of the Campaign for UB.

The scholarships are worth $2,000 to $3,500, depending on how much scholarship money they already received from the university.
