"Closing of House Brings Criticism" by Douglas Turner echoes, no doubt, the sentiments of many Americans. We have been strongly encouraged to go about our daily lives whether it be to travel, report for work or engage in family activities. Yet the House of Representatives has chosen to shut down. According to the article, it had been reported that there was space available in Washington to conduct business. There appears to be no precedent for this in American history. It would seem that Congressman Jack Quinn showed great leadership, when he dismissed his staff, who were, no doubt frightened, and yet he remained.
I did not vote for President George W. Bush. However, I believe he is to be commended for setting an example by going ahead with his planned conference in China. His actions were congruent with his words.
