In 1797, French balloonist Andre-Jacques Garnerin made the first parachute descent, landing safely from a height of about 3,000 feet. . . . In 1836, Sam Houston was inaugurated as the first constitutionally elected president of the Republic of Texas. . . . In 1883, the original Metropolitan Opera House in New York held its grand opening with a performance of Gounod's "Faust." . . . In 1962, President John F. Kennedy announced an air and naval blockade of Cuba, following the discovery of Soviet missile bases on the island. . . .

FUTURE VOTES -- There are two more votes in the family of Lackawanna Mayor John J. Kuryak. His wife, the former Karen Cornish, gave birth Wednesday to twins, Avery Joh, weighing 5 pounds, 6 ounces, and sister Payton Ann, 5 pounds, 4 ounces.

Confidential secretary Donald Grosso has his own recollections of a child on each knee. His twins, Mark and Michael, are identical. They are now 35. Grosso remembers that twins can start off colicky.

And the mayor thought electioneering was vigorous!. . .

HARVEST BAZAAR -- Dawn Smart, secretary at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 49 Indian Church Road, sent word that a fall harvest bazaar will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 10 at the church and will include a luncheon from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., a grocery booth, theme baskets, sewing and craft items, a lollipop booth, attic treasures, used jewelry, fudge, cookie and candy jars, baked goods and jellies and jams. TREE OFFER -- Communities wishing to plant a disease-resistant, 6-foot American Liberty Elm, as a memorial to the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorism, can order one at half-price from the Elm Research Institute, a nonprofit organization.
