A memorial service will be held Monday for Walter H. Merrill, 58, a Hamburg insurance broker who died on Oct. 8, 2001, in Mercy San Juan Hospital in Carmichael, Calif.
Merrill's daughter, Wendy Dwerlkotte of Redwood City, Calif., had persuaded her father, who had been ill with cancer for more than two years, to travel to California to consult with a cancer specialist there.
A native of St. Catharines, Ont., Merrill moved with his family to Hamburg when he was a teenager.
He worked for Ford Motor Co. for 15 years and then moved to California, where he was employed as an electrician by Ray-Chem Corp. of Menlo Park.
Merrill returned to Hamburg in the late 1980s. He also returned to school and graduated from Daemen College with a degree in personal and commercial insurance.
Merrill was a member of Living Stone Lodge, F&AM.
Surviving in addition to his daughter are two sons, Dwayne of Fremont, Calif., and Ronald of North Collins; six grandchildren; and his companion, Suzan Mancini of Hamburg.
A memorial service will be held at noon Monday in Forest Lawn chapel, followed by burial in the cemetery.
