WEIGH THE HUMAN COSTS VS. WASTE FIRM'S PAYMENT

How much money does Chemical Waste Management Co. pay the Town of Lewiston or Porter to risk all the children at the nearby school campus, tolerate noise of trucks, and road wear, release of toxins into the environment, and health of all citizens in exchange for burial of hazardous wastes in its landfills?

The calculation was done by Mr. Jim Langlois, town councilman, at the hearing on this matter in August. He said, "Homeowners would probably pay about an average of $50 per year more in taxes without this CWM payment."

Is this a payoff or a rip off?

The Porter Town Council is poised to make a momentous decision on the expansion proposal of this landfill. I urge residents and neighbors to let their elected officials know how you want them to vote on this issue without delay. The medical costs of one person's illness could equal a large part of CWM's entire payment to either town.
