MADISON LEE MCCARTHY, 5; LOVED ANGELS

A Mass of Christian Burial for Madison Lee "Maddy" McCarthy, of the Town of Evans, will be offered at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 2050 South Creek Road, North Evans. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Lackawanna.

The 5-year-old daughter of Mike and Suzy McCarthy died Thursday (Sept. 27, 2001) in Southtowns Catholic School, Lake View.

Before going to school that morning, she told her father, a Buffalo police lieutenant, that she "loved angels" and proudly attached her angel pin to her school uniform.

Later, while in class, she signaled her teacher that she needed to go to the restroom. Her teacher and classmates heard her cry out, "I want my mommy . . . mommy!" She was found dying on the floor. The family is awaiting word on the cause of her death.

Maddy's love for angels was evident in every room of the home she shared with her parents and little brother, Michael, 3, according to her mother, who said, "The pictures and statues of angels present throughout the house are too numerous to count."

Her parents said that since Maddy was old enough to talk, "she spoke about being an angel." She often asked to be taken to see the angels in Our Lady of Victory Basilica. Her mother remembered Maddy telling her, "Mommy, I'll still love you when I'm an angel."

Like many little girls her age, Maddy enjoyed flowers, coloring, dancing and gymnastics and enjoyed fun times at her grandmother's cottage at Lime Lake in Cattaraugus County.

In addition to her parents and brother, she is survived by her grandparents, Joseph and Rosalie Polakiewicz of Tennessee and Michael McCarthy and Kathleen Higgins McCarthy, both of Buffalo.
