I am writing this letter in the hopes that public officials might be spurred into action. According to news reports, our government's primary response to the terrorist attacks is to build an evidentiary case against the perpetrators and their accomplices. Presumably the evidence gathered will be used to prosecute these individuals in either a world court or a U.S. federal court.
Unfortunately, as of today's date, not one U.S. attorney has been appointed to fill any of the vacancies created when the U.S. attorneys under the Clinton administration either resigned or were let go. Here in Buffalo, our U.S. attorney's office is being capably run by First Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathleen Mehltretter. However, there has been no appointment of a U.S. attorney to fill the vacancy created by the departure of Denise O'Donnell.
In times such as these, our community and in fact our entire nation would benefit from the security that will surely come from the appointment of competent men and women to prosecute these crimes against America.
