American Legion Post 928 in Angola moved one step closer to a new home Wednesday night, with the recommendation by the Town of Evans Planning Board that its proposed site be rezoned.
The post, located at 159 N. Main St. in Angola, has had to cope with a lack of space and parking, according to Commander George Braun.
The new hall would be built on Route 5 near Sweetland Road, across from the Evans Post Office. It requires rezoning from suburban residential to general business.
Even though the number of veterans is dropping with the passing of the huge population of World War II veterans, Braun said, he is confident that the post will be able to grow.
"What we've started is Sons of the Legion" to draw younger participants, he said. "And . . . maybe we'll be able to pick up some new members from Derby, North Evans and Highland."
Braun said the group is looking into grants to help pay for the facility, which is expected to cost between $500,000 and $600,000. It would include a dining facility and banquet hall for 250 to 300 people and a bar area for 125 to 150.
The next step for is scheduling of a public hearing on the rezoning. The Town Board is expected to address the issue during its meeting Wednesday.
