HOWARD F. SEEGER, MEAT MARKET OWNER

A memorial service for Howard F. Seeger, who owned a Buffalo meat market for many years, will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday in Vandercher & Dick Funeral Home, 2549 Main St. Burial will be in Forest Lawn.

Seeger died Sept. 20, 2001, in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst, after a brief illness. He was 85.

Born in Buffalo, he was the third generation of his family to operate Seeger's Meats, which his grandfather, Gottlieb, opened at 369 Broadway in 1848. The family had started in the meat trade in Germany. The business passed to Seeger's father, Albert, who moved it to 1626 Broadway.

The market closed when Howard Seegar retired in 1970 -- 43 years after he had started working for his father at age 11.

In retirement, he and his wife, the former Arlene Cowells, traveled extensively. They had taken more than 25 cruises before she died in 1997.
