"Get government out of our lives." What a banner! Interestingly, the strongest single force capable of coping with this terrorism crisis is "government." The $40 billion released immediately was available thanks to taxes and the Clinton administration's frugality in accruing this cushion. This is not an end-all, but it is a crutch and a great comfort.
Now the airline industry executives want government in their lives, along with those overbearing tax dollars. Should this be labeled corporate welfare? After the terrorist attacks, 26,000 airline workers were furloughed immediately. I wonder how many executives experienced immediate income loss.
We are all expected to share in the sacrifice of controlling terrorism. Are all of us actually going to participate? These are indeed very trying and telling times.
