Democrat Jeff Swiatek has added his name to another line on the Nov. 6 ballot in the race for Erie County comptroller.
Swiatek, a Cheektowaga council member who is opposing incumbent Republican Nancy Naples in her bid for a third term, won Conservative Party backing in Tuesday's primary election, defeating Sharon A. Caetano.
With 394 of 750 districts reporting, Swiatek had 58 percent of the vote to Caetano's 42 percent.
Political observers consider the primary result an indication of how well Swiatek will do against Naples.
Caetano, who left her job in the county's Department of Senior Services to campaign, ran to challenge the endorsement of Swiatek by Conservative leaders, contending that they should not endorse one of the major party candidates. Party leaders charged that she was a stand-in for Naples.
