Gov. George E. Pataki signed legislation Tuesday that will allow two or more municipalities to work together to establish a business im provement district that benefits each municipality.
Sponsored by state senator Mary Lou Rath, R-Amherst, and Assembly Majority Leader Paul A. Tokasz, D-Cheektowaga, the legis lation was created in response to business leaders in the towns of Amherst and Cheektowaga, who brought up the concept of utilizing a joint business improvement dis trict.
Business owners are interested in redeveloping the Harlem Road, Kensington Expressway, and Wehrle Drive area, which serves as a gateway for both towns. John Emery, spokesperson for Rath, said the first goal is improv ing sidewalk conditions to increase accessibility.
