A CENTURY AGO at the Pan-American Exposition found a Niagara Falls group that included J.C. Level devising a plan to move the Temple of Music -- where President William McKinley had been mortally wounded -- to the St. Louis Expo (after the close of the Pan-Am Expo) to become a permanent monument to the assassinated president. The plan didn't materialize because the building was demolished at the end of the Exposition here. . . .

ON THIS DAY -- In 1690, one of the earliest American newspapers, Publick Occurrences, published its first -- and last -- edition in Boston. . . . In 1789, the first Congress adopted 12 amendments to the Constitution and sent them to the states for ratification. Ten of the amendments became the Bill of Rights. . . . In 1890, President Benjamin Harrison signed a measure establishing Sequoia National Park. . . . Also in 1890, Wilford Woodruff, president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, issued a manifesto formally renouncing the practice of polygamy. . . .. . . In 1981, Sandra Day O'Connor was sworn in as the first female justice on the Supreme Court. . . .

CHICKEN DINNERS -- St. Michael the Archangel National Catholic Church, 250 27th St., Niagara Falls, will serve its annual chicken dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $7 for adults and $3.50 for children 3 to 12. Take-outs will be available by calling the church hall at 282-0170 the day of the dinner. . . .

DEADLINE for making reservations for the "Country Fair" luncheon Oct. 9 at Bohn's Restaurant, 5256 Clinton St. Road, Batavia, is Monday. The luncheon will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The tab will be $9.

CRAFT SHOW -- More than 50 crafters will be on hand for the Our Lady of Pompeii School Association fall craft show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 7 in the school hall at 129 Laverack Ave., Lacaster.
