Gladys Szabo, a supporter of the arts, died Thursday (Sept. 20, 2001) in Kresge Residence of Hospice Buffalo, Cheektowaga, after an illness of six months. She was 81.
Born Gladys Bowers in Muncie, Pa., she moved to Buffalo at age 5. She lived on Lancaster Avenue for 50 years.
Mrs. Szabo served as hostess for studio receptions for her husband, Laszlo Szabo, a portrait and landscape artist. She was an active member of the Fine Arts League and a staunch supporter of traditional art.
Mrs. Szabo was known for her culinary expertise and served as greeter and hostess at many art shows in Western New York. She frequently was called upon to host parties for celebrities visiting the area.
She also was a member of the city's Republican Women's Club.
Her husband died in 1968.
Survivors include two stepsons, George of Niagara Falls and Lester John of Amherst; a stepdaughter, Betty Jane Williams of Arlington, Mass.; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service will be scheduled.
