A CENTURY AGO at the Pan-American Exposition found many interesting people visiting or making plans to visit the wonderland of exhibits and latest technology. It was learned that Martha Jane Burke, the former Martha Jane Cannary, better known as the frontierswoman Calamity Jane, had paid a visit and spread the word about how enjoyable it was. . . .

ON THIS DAY -- In 1789, Congress passed the First Judiciary Act, which provided for an attorney general and a Supreme Court. . . . In 1869, thousands of businessmen were ruined in a Wall Street panic after financiers Jay Gould and James Fisk attempted to corner the gold market. . . . In 1957, the Brooklyn Dodgers played their last game in Ebbets Field, defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates, 2-0. . . .

STILL AT IT -- Attorney Crucian Messina was given a surprise 89th birthday party Friday by friends in Erie County Surrogate's Court, which is one of his faithful stops on his daily rounds in downtown Buffalo. Still practicing law after 63 years, Messina is a retired Erie County commissioner of jurors. . . .

THE INSIDE STORY on the life of Pierre-Auguste Renoir and his loves, exquisite paintings, his elegant sculpture, his Riviera Gardens and even his arthritis will be among the topics of a five-session course beginning Tuesday in Trinity Center, 371 Delaware Ave. Sessions will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. the next five Tuesdays.
